SUNDAY SERVICES

"The Day of the Lights" to be celebrated Sunday, January 8th 10:30AM

Epiphany,  meaning "vision of God", which falls on January 6, celebrates the revelation of God the Son in Jesus The Christ.  Western Christians commemorate principally (but not solely) the visitation of the Biblical Magi to the Baby Jesus, and thus Jesus' physical manifestation to ALL the people and cultures, and that the work of God in the world would not be limited to only a few.  Eastern Christians commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God. It is also a time of focusing on  community and fellowship.
Please join us for the traditional blessing of the doorway and the acknowledgement that, now, the work of Christmas begins!  *20+M+C+B+12    Music by David Swain-Salomon, Rev. Lorie Miller & Will Zecco.
By the guidance of a star this day revealed to our world The Christ! And,we are blessed! revj

Sunday, January 15th, 10:30AM "Remaining Awake"

The success of Martin Luther King's non-violent movement against segregation and injustice in the American south owes much to his visionary and    inspirational eloquence.  What is your vision?  What are your values?  What message do your words share? Are you supporting your vision and values.

Friday January 20th   Martin Luther King Day

'"Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars....

Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.' –Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or  Community?"                           The Rev. Martin Luther King

Sunday, January 22nd, "Let The Dragon Roar" 10:30AM

Every moment holds the potential for awakening. This beautiful traditional Buddhist prayer reminds us of the power of every moment to bring us ease and inner peace. And, please honor the tradition and wear red!

Just as the soft rains fill the streams,
pour into the rivers, and join together in the oceans,
so may the power of every moment of your goodness
flow forth to awaken and heal all beings–
those here now, those gone before, those yet to come.

By the power of every moment of your goodness,
may your heart’s wishes be soon fulfilled
as completely shining as the bright full moon,
as magically as by a wish-fulfilling gem.

By the power of every moment of your goodness,
may all dangers be averted and all disease be gone.
May no obstacle come across your way.
May you enjoy fulfillment and long life.

For all in whose heart dwells respect,
who follow the wisdom and compassion, of the Way,
may your life prosper in the four blessings
of old age, beauty, happiness and strength.

Chinese New Year 2012

Chinese New Year will be celebrated on January 23. The New Year festival will start from January 22 (Chinese New Year' Eve) and end on February 6 (Lantern Festival). 2012 marks the 4710th Chinese New Year, and this time it is the year of dragon according to the Chinese zodiac calendar. Since ancient times, the Chinese New Year was considered as the time to honor ancestors and heavenly deities. In addition, it was the time to organize family gatherings and grand feasts.

The dragon is the 5th sign of the Chinese zodiac and it is regarded as an auspicious symbol which stands for power, good luck, success, and happiness.

Tradition says that Lord Buddha had called for all the animals to come to him before he departed from the earth. When the cat got to know about the news, he told rat about it and the two animals decided to go together the next day. However, the next morning the rat did not wake up the cat. Therefore, the cat could not make it to the gathering on time and did not get a year. This is why there is no year of the cat and this is one of the reasons why cats hate rats.

The rat made it first to the assembly and received the first year. Though, the rat did a lot of trickery to reach first to the congregation. At first he tricked the ox to let him ride on its head. The ox agreed and they went together. Just when they were about to reach to the assembly the clever rat jumped off the ox's head and got through the finish line first. This is why the year of the rat is the first year in the cycle and the year of the ox is the second. This is probably the reason why the first of the twelve years is the Year of the Rat then followed by the year of Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. But only twelve animals came to offer Lord Buddha farewell and as a token of appreciation he named a year after each of the twelve animals in the order they arrived. In this way each year got linked with an animal. People born in that year are believed to share different traits.
